What
you need to know about credit cards scam companies.
- If you were called by a company (claiming to be a credit card
company), and you gave them your personal/financial information
such as your checking account number, you most likely have been
scammed.
- If you were required to authorize a debit from your checking
account, usually over $100, you most likely have been scammed.
- If you were mailed a "certificate" that said you were
pre-approved for a "credit card" (with a credit line
of $5,000 or $10,000) and you mailed them check or money order
for around $39 - $59, you most likely have been scammed.
-
These companies have no mercy. The government, both state and
federal are aware of these companies and are working to shut them
down. But, it seems when one company is shut down, another is
opened in a different location.
HOW
DO I GET MY MONEY BACK?
Here's
what we know and what you can try to get your money back:
If
your bank account has been debited from one of these companies,
go to your bank, you must do this within 60 days from the date
you were debited, fill out an affidavit (your bank will supply
the form) stating you did not authorize the debit and you get
your money back.
Your bank must (NACHA regulations http://www.nacha.org
) put the money back in your account. Likewise, you should CLOSE
your account and reopen a new account with a different account
number.
You may want to try checking out the BBB also - http://www.bbb.org
.
From
what we've heard, it's nearly impossible to contact any of the
companies we have listed in our warnings pages. If you've mailed
a check to these companies - try to stop payment on your check.
If you can't stop payment on the check, try going to your bank,
and speak with a bank manager or someone with POWER to reverse
the debit/charge/check.
By
the way, GO TO THE BANK IN PERSON -- don't call them --
you will always get better service if you go there in person and
explain the situation.
Please note, many people will not be able to get their
money back.....typically people who have mailed checks to these
companies will not be able to get your money back from your bank.
BUT, it's worth trying. If you're checking account was debited
from one of the companies listed, you have a better chance of
getting your money back.
